From the age of seven, Angel Perez has been practicing martial arts. He now channels his passion for his sport as the sensei and owner of Champion Martial Arts in Miami, FL.
Angel has a genuine passion for teaching children and a real warmth that one might not automatically associate with a 2nd degree black belt. His personality instantly comes across in person, but Angel also needed his online presence to convey this same spirit. Key to marketing to the parents is conveying how their children can benefit from the program at Champion Martial Arts. And text, no matter how eloquent, simply isn't that effective at painting that kind of emotional picture for parents.
Angel worked with TurnHere to reach out and tell his story to prospective parents through online video.
"I definitely appreciated their approach," said Angel. "I like things to flow naturally, and prefer to speak from my heart. After all, I've been doing this for many, many years."
The final video is 90 seconds long and flows through shots of students, the studio, Angel, and parents. Students are seen smiling, while exercising with Angel along the perimeter of the map. The video captures the sheer pride when a young student executes a move and flips Angel onto his back. There's a quick cut to a parent and shows the many trophies won by Angel and students over the years. And throughout the video, Angel can be heard, talking about his philosophy and the student experience.
"The production process was incredibly smooth. We shot about 20 minutes before class and the filmmaker caught footage during an actual class," said Angel. "The TurnHere filmmaker was great. He had a good sense of what we needed to convey, and exactly how to do it. For example, it was his idea to include one of the parents, and that turned out to be a very strong part of the video."
The video from TurnHere features prominently on the Champion Martial Arts website and according to Angel, it's making an impact. "With the video, more people get to see me in action on the web. They see the school and students in action. We've definitely noticed more calls from people who have seen the video," he said. "The TurnHere video is fantastic. I wouldn't want to change a thing."
Angel added, "We also work with very young children, often as young as three years old. Prospective parents aren't always sure if their child is ready for judo. They seem too young. The video shows just what our young students are capable of accomplishing. It's very eye opening for parents — and gives them the comfort level needed to call and enroll."
